Mount Ikoma sits on the border between Osaka and Nara Prefectures, with an amusement park perched right at its summit. This park opened in 1929 and remains active to this day. Back in the 1970s, when I was a child, my grandparents often took me there during summer vacation. Taking the Ikoma Cable Car up the mountain always filled me with a wonderful, summery excitement. Once we reached the top, my grandfather would invariably order a massive mug of beer; I remember watching him in wonder, marveling at how he could possibly finish such a giant drink.

Upon exiting Kintetsu Ikoma Station, Mount Ikoma immediately comes into view. From there, the path leads through Ikoma Shinchi toward Hozan-ji Temple—an area that is particularly interesting if you enjoy taking your time with photography. Following the hiking trail upward leads you straight to the summit.

In fact, Mount Ikoma is famous for its night view, which is considered just as beautiful as the one from Mount Rokko. On this trip, I descended the mountain toward the Ishikiri side. The shrines and temples on this slope were framed beautifully by the autumn leaves, which happened to be at their peak right at that moment.
