Why do I use standard mirrorless cameras to take VR180 photos? The primary reason is resolution. Even affordable modern cameras now boast a resolution of around 7,000 dots diagonally, allowing me to create ultra-high-definition 14K VR180 images. On top of that, they can be purchased for a fraction of the price of dedicated VR180 cameras. Furthermore, these VR photos can be easily published on a personal website.

This time, carrying my dual-camera rig, I traveled to Hyogo via the Shiomibashi Line to photograph the Akashi Strait and Kobe. While the coastline offering a panoramic view of the massive Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is spectacular, the view from the bus terminal is also fantastic. As a tourist destination, Kobe’s status has declined somewhat, yet the crowds in Nankinmachi (Chinatown) are still overwhelming. It is ironic that Kobe, once a modern and fashionable city, has transformed into a “retro” location—which, in other words, makes it a much more compelling subject for photography.

I concluded my trip at Mukogawa Station, which sits directly atop a bridge, by switching to monochrome. Sinchiro, who dominates the world of still-image slideshows on DeoVR and YouTube, always ends his slideshows by turning the final photo black and white. It looks so incredibly cool that I decided to borrow (or rather, “steal”) that technique myself.
