In Kitakagaya, an ongoing initiative is transforming the area into an “art town” by using the vacant factories and houses—remnants of the declining shipbuilding industry—as canvases for creativity. Before the bubble era, Osaka was hardly the kind of city that attracted tourists. However, following its post-bubble decline, the infrastructure began to deteriorate. When you add the “spice” of art to that decay, the city becomes a fascinating subject for 3D VR photography (VR180 still images). The combination of aging infrastructure and contemporary art is compelling precisely because of its imbalance.

Coincidentally, themes from the book I am currently reading, Why Nations Fail, cross my mind. It feels as though the Keihanshin (Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe) region is leading the charge in Japan’s rapid decline as the country shifts from an inclusive economy to an extractive one. As I approach my early elderly years, it is ironic that this very decay of infrastructure provides such vivid color to my eccentric hobby of 3D VR photography.
